BACP Universities & Colleges A Division of BACP

FE Special Interest Group

In 2010 the Sub Committee changed designation to Special Interest Group but liaison between FE Counsellors and BACP UC is still the heart of its role; SIG exists to facilitate FE counsellors to contribute to the organisation. In other words, we ensure that the interests of FE are represented in a variety of ways.

This year, the SIG Committee has changed with the departure of Dawn Hastings to HE and the addition of Jane Darougar who has been co-opted to represent the 6TH Form section of FE.  Liaison between FE Counsellors and BACP UC is still the heart of its role; SIG Committee exists to facilitate FE counsellors to contribute to the organisation. In other words, we ensure that the interests of FE are represented in a variety of ways.

During the last year, our most notable achievement has been the production and dissemination of generic Counselling in FE publicity video.  We bid for and obtained funding from BACP to pay for an advertising company to help us produce a cartoon style promotional video for use in any FE institution.  The video was launched at both this year’s Conferences.

In addition, we have fed back the main concerns and themes (threats to service; pay and conditions in FE) picked up from the Jiscmail to the Executive and this has enabled the Exec to decide direction on action to be taken. Latterly, this has led to the excellent research into the impact of counselling on academic outcomes which was conducted by Patti Wallace, BACP Lead Advisor, University & College Counselling and a short fact finding survey into Pay and Conditions (still on-going). We are also committed to FE areas of research interest, which could be incorporated into any new Exec research proposals as well as being conducted ourselves.

The SIG Committee meets face to face, twice a year usually in London although venue can be changed if we gain more members from different parts of the country. We also hold 3 teleconferences. Travel and lunch expenses are paid for face to face meetings.

Presently we are a small cohort of 3 plus a co-opted member to represent 6th form Colleges but please consider whether you could contribute on specific projects to this group. You will be making a very valuable contribution and it is certainly enjoyable attending the meetings and spending time with colleagues from around the country on a regular basis.

How to Access The Files Area and Archive Section of Jiscmail

Go to www.jiscmail.ac.uk and login on the right under "Your Groups" with your username ( usually full college email address) and whatever password you set up originally. If you've forgotten it there is a facility to reset it.

Once the homepage is up you should have a list of all the lists you belong too on the right. Click on Counsellors in FE, this will take you to the counsellors in FE homepage. On the right you will see TOOLS, and below that, Files Area. Click on it and you will be taken to an alphabetical list of folders covering a range of topics discussed on the forum. Scroll through and double click any that you want to open.

The archive is slightly different. Login to Jiscmail and the Counsellors in FE homepage as above. Instead of Tools, look down 2 more boxes to the one marked "Archive" and type in any key words relevant to your search. This will bring up an extensive list of all past emails containing the key word(s) requested.
